A BIG PART OF COAST GUARD LIFE INVOLVES PORT SECURITY. MOST OF OUR STUDENTS ARE INVOLVED IN THIS ACTIVITY FROM TIME-TO-TIME. THIS IS A TIME CONSUMING ACTIVITY OFTENTIMES CALLING FOR ADJUSTMENT OF CLASSROOM TIME. IF WE HAVE TO RESCHEDULE CLASSES, WE DO! THIS IS OUR MISSION.

USCG STATION KETCHIKAN ALASKA AT WORK



Coast Guard Station Ketchikan received a request to medevac a 77-year-old female at Clam Cove on Gravina Island reporting chest and arm pain. The station launched a safe boat, arriving on scene within 15 minutes. She was delivered in stable condition to EMS ashore for further transport to Ketchikan General Hospital.

CWO2 MICHAEL MAHONEY HONORED


CWO2 MICHAEL MAHONEY began his Vincennes University instruction in the fall of 2003. He was the first student registered in the newly formed Coast Guard Community College. He graduated with highest honors from Vincennes. He has been selected as the OUTSTANDING RECENT ALUMNI AWARD FROM VINCENNES 1998-2008. He will be honored at homecoming activities on campus at Vincennes in October.

Mike went on to finish his B.A. in Leadership from Ft. Hays State University @ Ft. Hays, Kansas graduating in December 2007 with highest honors. He is now working on his Master's Degree in History at California State University Dominguez Hills. He plans on completing his Ph. D. before he retires from Coast Guard Duty. He is presently attached to Law Enforcement USCG District 13.

WELCOME NEW SITE TO FALL SCHEDULE

Coast Guard Station Chatham received a new search and rescue boat Wednesday, July 2, 2008. The 42-foot boat, manufactured by Safe Boat International, is designed to be highly maneuverable in breaking surf and will eventually replace Station Chatham's other two surf boats. The new boat can maneuver through 15-foot surf and 50-knot winds.


New Bedford trawler Blue Sea II was 95 miles east of Cape

A Coast Guard helicopter crew airlifted a 56-year-old fisherman who was suffering from abdominal pain aboard a fishing vessel approximately 95 miles east of Chatham today.

The Coast Guard First District Command Center in Boston received a call around 9 a.m., from the Rescue Coordination Center in Halifax, Canada, reporting the Blue Sea II, based in New Bedford, Mass., had a fisherman aboard in need of medical attention.

Coast Guard Air Station Cape Cod, Mass., launched an HH-60 Jayhawk helicopter and arrived on scene around 11 a.m. The Jayhawk crew airlifted the man from the vessel and transported him to a Hyannis, Mass., hospital.


STUDENTS IN ACTION


A 47-foot boat crew from Coast Guard Station Gloucester, Mass., pass a dewatering pump to the disabled lobster boat, Kizmat Dec. 22, 2007. The boat starting taking on water after a fire in the engine room melted plastic pipes on the exhaust system.

The end is in sight for ERTH 204 OCEANOGRAPHY and SPCH 202 ORAL INTERPRETATION [Sea Literature]. Students are to complete their course work with the on board instructor A.W. LONGACRE. He will post grades to Jennie Scarborough at Newport. She will transmit these grades to Deanna Brian at Vincennes University and Tanya Hatfield at Pensacola.

Job-Ticket holders for SPCH 202 Power Point Presentations of Sea Literature are to be collected by BM1 Aaron Udland. He will then send the entire package to Newport for evaluation and grading. Please mail the packet to 1590 NW Spring St Newport OR 97365. Please do not mail this packet until all students have returned their Job-Ticket Holders.

NEXT CLASSES: POLS 201 INTRODUCTION TO POLITICAL SCIENCE 3ch Al Fitzpatrick 18 AUG - 26 SEPT 2008 USCG STATION JUNEAU, AK.

A unique course blended to the Station's location in the midst of the Alaskan State Governmental Complex. Instructor will guide students via SIGHTSPEED [Instructional time frame for 2-hours of classroom instruction twice a week will be set by the Commanding Officer]. Emphasis in this course will be placed on the internal workings of government agencies of administration on the local, state, and national level.
Instructor [Al Fitzpatrick] will guide students through this study of the basic principles of government and its institutions. He will be on board in Juneau, AK during the mid-term of the course to lead students through State government visitations.

Al successfully finished classes in North Carolina and was a tremendous hit with all of our students at Oregon Inlet, Hatteras Inlet, and Hobucken.
